“He arrived at the intersection of American history, where he put a quarter in the parking meter of destiny, leaving the car, looking to avoid stepping in the urine puddle of jurisprudence.” — JON STEWART, mocking the media’s coverage of Trump’s arrival in court“Seriously, are we going to follow this guy to court every [expletive] day? Such legislation would make Pennsylvania the first major fossil fuel-producing state to adopt a carbon-pricing program. Shapiro's proposal comes as environmentalists are pressuring him to do more to fight climate change in the nation’s No. 2 gas-producing state and as the state's highest court considers a challenge to his predecessor's plan to adopt a carbon-pricing program. Currently, about 60% of the state's electricity comes from natural gas-fired power plants, and the 50% requirement could hurt demand for electricity from those plants. Shapiro’s administration did not provide many details of his strategy Wednesday, including how much money power plants would pay or how the average household electric bill would be affected.

They, along with the other TikTok and ByteDance employees in this story, spoke on the condition of anonymity. Even if the House's "Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act" is signed into law, TikTok employees have good reason to believe it won't stick. For current TikTok and ByteDance employees, it's become increasingly difficult to understand which threats are real and which are political bluster. "For my team, we're so busy we don't really think about it," a third staffer told BI when asked about the House bill. House Speaker Mike Johnson has known, as so many of us have, that the Mayorkas impeachment was doomed to fail from the start. But at its core, impeachment is a political process, not a legal one. Over the past year, Congress’ use of impeachment has gone from merely political to politically gratuitous. House Republicans opened an impeachment inquiry into President Biden himself last year over only the murkiest of corruption charges. The Mayorkas impeachment is, in essence, about policy disagreements that Republicans would like to air to the public in an election year.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Animal welfare advocates filed a lawsuit Wednesday seeking to invalidate Wisconsin's new wolf management plan, accusing state wildlife officials of violating the state's open meetings law and disregarding comments from wolf researchers and supporters. The Great Lakes Wildlife Alliance, also known as Friends of the Wisconsin Wolf and Wildlife, filed the latest lawsuit in Dane County Circuit Court. The organization describes itself as a statewide group of hunters, farmers, politicians, business owners and animal welfare advocates who support science-based conservation. Adam Payne, the department secretary at the time, announced revisions were coming after the February talks with the organizations that favor further limiting the wolf population. The Department of Natural Resources adopted a wolf management plan in 1999 that called for capping the population at 350 wolves.

CNN —The House Judiciary Committee has subpoenaed an assistant US attorney on the Hunter Biden criminal case, according to a copy of the subpoena reviewed by CNN. House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan initially requested testimony from Assistant US Attorney Lesley Wolf in June along with a number of Justice Department officials involved in the Hunter Biden criminal investigation. The Department of Justice has made six high-level officials, including special counsel David Weiss, available to testify, but has not allowed the panel to interview Wolf. In the subpoena letter, Jordan called the DOJ’s reasons for withholding Wolf’s testimony “unpersuasive.” DOJ declined to comment to CNN on the subpoena. During his closed-door interview with Congress earlier this month, Weiss defended Wolf.

Biden sought to kickstart SAF production with a $1.25 per gallon production tax credit in the IRA. To be eligible for the credit, SAF producers must demonstrate their fuel is 50% lower in emissions than conventional jet fuel. The DOE spokesperson confirmed that ethanol producers must cut emissions of they want a long-term role in SAF production. Still, ethanol producers need carbon pipelines because many ethanol plants are not near geologically appropriate underground storage sites. Other options for reducing ethanol's carbon intensity include using renewable energy at ethanol plants, or climate-friendly farming practices for corn.

Trump’s lawyers have repeatedly complained to the judge in the Mar-a-Lago criminal document-mishandling case that they haven’t had proper access to classified evidence in the case as they prepare for a trial next May. Cannon, a Trump appointee, has so far given Trump’s team some of the leeway they’ve asked for in the documents investigation. The defense teams have access to more than 1 million pages of information in the case, according to court filings. In a filing last week, prosecutors told the judge Trump’s team has cried wolf about their access to evidence in the case, including classified records. Trump’s legal team has been reviewing and discussing classified evidence in Miami, most recently on Tuesday, when the former president joined his lawyers in the SCIF during the afternoon, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The Tacoma-based Point Defiance Zoo is conducting dental exams and teeth-cleaning in its managed care program. The fittingly named vet is helping bolster a population of only 270 red wolves known to exist, mostly in managed care or zoos. The animals in managed care tend to live longer than free-ranging red wolves, in part because they have annual exams and dental hygiene. The rare red wolves once ranged from New York to Texas, but by the late 1960s to 1970s a once thriving population was decimated. Three of those released came from the Point Defiance Zoo program, including a pup born April 13.

It is, however, by all appearances not a great time to be long stocks. But before that could happen, the markets would fall in response to Iran's actions and the U.S. commitment to defend Israel. All three enemies — Iran, Russia and China — are, indeed, being challenged by the U.S. in some capacity. But is it really too much to argue that multiple compression is not on par with "the most dangerous" of times? WAKE FOREST, N.C. (AP) — The endangered red wolf can survive in the wild, but only with “significant additional management intervention,” according to a long-awaited population viability analysis released Friday. It calls for spending nearly $328 million over the next 50 years to get the red wolf off the endangered species list. The red wolf once roamed from central Texas to southern Iowa and as far east as Long Island, New York. “We have not yet identified locations for establishing new Red Wolf populations,” the report said. But the viability study cautioned that such releases be done very carefully, so as not to reduce the genetic diversity within the captive-bred population.

There's a fairly simple way to characterize Societe Generale strategist Albert Edwards' latest note to clients. Bears are boys who cried wolf (recession), and investors are the shepherd who have become sick of the ongoing warnings and have stopped heeding their calls. Societe GeneraleAll of this optimism is likely a mistake, Edwards said as he doubled down on his recession call. In an May note, Edwards said "recession is a done deal," citing The Conference Board's Leading Economic Index, which has been at recessionary levels for months now. The indicators takes into account variables like manufacturing activity, stock performance, consumer confidence, housing market activity, and bond market activity.

In the topsy-turvy world of 2024 Republican politics, rivals of Donald J. Trump had been bracing for weeks for his second indictment with more dread than any sense of opportunity. They snap to Mr. Trump’s defense, no matter how outrageous the charges are or who is making them — Democrats, the news media, local prosecutors or, now, federal ones. Donations surged after Mr. Trump’s first indictment in Manhattan. Even prominent Republicans eager for the party to cast aside Mr. Trump in 2024 were concerned ahead of the indictment. They have long been exasperated by the immunity of Mr. Trump’s base to almost any attack or argument, swarming to neutralize any perceived political threat almost by habit.

New York CNN —Dire warnings about the economic chaos and catastrophe that will ensue if the US debt ceiling isn’t lifted soon abound. The debt ceiling crisis of 2011 caused Standard and Poor’s to downgrade US debt for the first time in history. Schwenkler says to expect “a lot more volatility” if debt ceiling issues don’t appear resolved by the last week of the month. By contrast, recovery from a debt-default crisis would likely start the day Congress, belatedly, suspended the debt ceiling,” he added. “A misstep over the debt ceiling would subject businesses and consumers to an economic shockwave,” he added.
New York CNN —The US economy is going from broken to bizarre. Covid crashed the American economy three years ago with no playbook for the wild recovery that would follow. And yet, the US economy today is growing, the job market is strong, and the consumer is still spending. The economy has added an astonishing 1.2 million jobs this year and the jobless rate matches the lowest since 1969. Goldman Sachs pegs recession odds at 35% and Fed Chair Jerome Powell last week said the economy could still skirt a recession.
Israel is increasingly relying on facial recognition in the occupied West Bank to track Palestinians and restrict their passage through key checkpoints, according to a new report, a sign of how artificial-intelligence-powered surveillance can be used against an ethnic group. At high-fenced checkpoints in Hebron, Palestinians stand in front of facial recognition cameras before being allowed to cross. When the technology fails to identify someone, soldiers train the system by adding their personal information to the database. Israel has long restricted the freedom of movement of Palestinians, but technological advances are giving the authorities powerful new tools. Amnesty called the process “automated apartheid.” Israel has strongly denied that it operates an apartheid regime.
Bosch said it plans to invest $1.5 billion to retool TSI's chip production facilities in Roseville, California to start producing silicon carbide chips by 2026. Bosch said the TSI facility would become the "third pillar" of in-house semiconductor production, along with two sites in Germany. The silicon carbide chips Bosch said it will manufacture at the TSI Roseville site are increasingly in demand by electric vehicle manufacturers. U.S-based Wolfspeed Inc (WOLF.N) is building new plants to make silicon carbide chips in New York State and in Germany. Bosch plans to acquire the buildings, machines and infrastructure of TSI as well as well as its commercial semiconductor business.

Tesla's stock is trading at about 43 times expected earnings, down from astronomical levels above 200 times in 2021, according to Refinitiv data. Tesla on Wednesday doubled down on the price war it started at the end of last year, as Musk said the company would prioritize sales growth ahead of profit. In the first quarter, Tesla posted its lowest quarterly gross profit margin in two years. You're investing in Elon Musk," said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer of Bokeh Capital Partners.
